Dublin Port is currently experiencing one of its busiest periods with 17.9 million tonnes of imports and exports in the first half of 2017. May alone saw 3.2 million gross tonnes of freight pass through the port.

The popular trade & tourism gateway is currently on target for another record year of exports. Along with the continued operation of ferry operators such as Seatruck, Irish Ferries & Stena Line, this has prompted the Dublin Port Company to begin work on further expansion of the port. This scheme will provide additional capacity for future growth.

The expansion project will see greater utilisation of port land and include better provision for immigration, customs and security facilities.

CEO of Seatruck Ferries, Alistair Eagles comments;

"It is exactly 10 years since Seatruck established a base in Dublin and commenced our services from the Port. During this time and with the addition of new purpose built tonnage we have seen significant growth in the traffic using our dedicated freight services. From the new kids on the block in 2007 in Aug 2017 it is amazing to see that we were the largest freight shipping in the Port. Seatruck welcomes the developments by Dublin Port which will create much needed space for future growth."

In addition to this expansion project, Dublin Port is also moving forward with the Alexandra Basin Redevelopment project which involves the construction of approximately 3 km of quay walls, deepening of the harbour basin and conservation of the port's Victorian industrial heritage.

Also, the 'Dublin Inland Port' project on 44 hectares of land near Dublin Airport will allow the storage of around 20,000 shipping containers, freeing up around 30 hectares in the port.

Both projects will improve the port's ability to handle larger ships and are part of the wider masterplan up to 2040.
