Recently the Irish Government has approved Rosslare’s €200m expansion plan.

In his statement, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Minister McGrath, said: 

“I am delighted to confirm that this vital project can now move to tender stage to upgrade the existing temporary facilities with a more permanent solution…”

What does the expansion plan involve, and how will this development support Rosslare Europort in meeting Brexit requirements?

While the port has always served an important purpose, it has become an increasingly vital entry-point into Ireland in recent years. 

Post Brexit, transporters looking to avoid UK customs have relied heavily on Rosslare to transport goods between Ireland and mainland Europe, especially as Dublin Port suffers further congestion. 

Recently, Finnlines have even established a new freight route from Rosslare to Zeebrugge, creating a new link between Ireland and Belgium (or Ireland and Finland), while just last week, an expansion plan for Rosslare Europort was approved by the Irish Government. 

What does the new expansion plan involve?

Costing an estimated €200m, the expansion plans will enable Rosslare Europort to build the required infrastructure to meet the demands of EU Customs, food controls and SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) legislation.

The funding will be claimed under the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR). 

This development provides the opportunity for Ireland to effectively handle these new controls on trade with the UK.

According to Minister McGrath:

“It will facilitate trade at the port and support other exciting opportunities being developed for Rosslare and the South East…I look forward to seeing the completion of the tender process and the commencement of these essential works over the period ahead.”

The upgrade works will allow Rosslare to remain a convenient and cost-effective entry point into Ireland from both the UK and Continental Europe.
